NEW DELHI - Indian authorities Tuesday imposed an indefinite curfew in India-controlled Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar, following fresh violence which left at least two persons dead, including a 25-year-old woman who was allegedly killed in accidental firing by security forces.

"Indefinite curfew has been clamped on Srinagar following the violence after days of calm," a senior government official said on condition of anonymity.

One person was killed when security forces allegedly opened fire at a stone-pelting angry crowd protesting the death of a man after falling into a drain during a demonstration in Batmaloo area of the city.

A woman was also killed by a stray bullet in the same area when security forces fired in air to disperse a crowd which went on a rampage and attacked a police building.

According to reports from Srinagar, the Chairman of moderate separatist alliance Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Tuesday staged a sit-in protest against the fresh killings in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

Farooq along with his supporters took to the streets and staged a sit-in at Rajouri Kadal locality. Thousands of the people joined the leader in his protest amid shouting slogans "Go India Go!' and "We want Freedom!"

The moderate separatist who was placed under house arrest for quite some days Tuesday managed to come out. The sit-in protest is part of his recently announced "civil disobedience program".

The hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been booked under Public Safety Act (PSA).

Meanwhile, thousands of the people attended funeral procession of the two youths who died earlier in police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) action in Srinagar.

Fresh clashes erupted in the city late Monday evening after an 11th class student Muzaffar Ahmad died after drowning in a stream. Locals alleged that police and paramilitary troopers chased him up to the stream.
