"In this autumn, we will carry out the greening project covering 600,000 square meters along the northern extended section of the Beijing Road and the north trunk road of the new district. The trees will be planted along both sides of the target roads, gradually including eight-meter green separators, fifty-meter green road edges, and green sidewalks. When the project is completed, the greenbelts along the roads will stretch over 120 meters in width, among the widest in the city," said Li Pin, deputy director of the high-tech development zone management committee on October 20.

So far, the first stage of the spring greening project has demonstrated great results. The two roads are lined with red flowers, golden landscape plants, and green economic trees. They have formulated a well-proportioned landscape belt full of bright colors.

"With this project, the gobi desert has shown a new view. We are expecting to see the whole scene when the project is completed," said Wang Jie, a local resident.

The construction team has driven large engineering vehicles into the work site. The second stage project has started in 27 sections simultaneously. On the Tianjin Road section along the northern trunk road, excavators are busy backfilling earth and cranes are putting trees with a diameter of at least 10cm into pits.

The greening project has won support of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and other companies and institutions along the road.

Dismantled walls can still be seen in some places, with colorful enclosure walls being built 20 meters away. On October 2, some companies received notice and drew back 20 meters with their building projects to reserve space for the greening project.

"The government’s greening project is good for the people. Companies may benefit from improved public resources. We are willing to cooperate in the perspective of corporate social responsibility," said Xie Ling, deputy general manager of Xintianrun Real Estate Development Co Ltd. The company has turned over lands previously planned to construct six buildings and have taken the initiative to plant trees in nearly 40,000 square meters area.

Dai Xinfu, Party secretary of No 7324 Plant, said that the northern trunk road and Beijing Road are transportation arteries of the northern new district. The greening project along the two roads is of great significance to the future development of the northern new district of Urumqi. Dai said that although his plant has limited space for factory buildings, it has managed to dismantle some factory buildings totaling 12,000 square meters to facilitate the people’s livelihood project.

On April 2, Zhu Hailun, Urumqi Party committee secretary, said in an inspection tour to the high-tech development zone that the city has decided to transfer the key greening project of the northern trunk road and extended Beijing Road to the high-tech development zone this year. In 10 days, the development zone completed the first stage project, planted 130,000 trees in an area of nearly 300,000 square meters, which are twenty-meter wide green belts alongside both sides of the roads, and filled back to about 100,000 cubic meters of soil.

Tang Jun, director of the high-tech development zone construction and transportation bureau, said that since late April the development zone has informed concerned companies, issued supporting policies, and established a district-level leader responsibility system covering every single unit to ensure all problems affecting people’s lives and work by the project will be settled.

In early July, the development zone began to purchase flowers, shrubs and trees for the project from the surrounding regions of the city and southern and northern Xinjiang. "We will plant 32,800 trees along the northern trunk road, and 44,676 trees, 654,414 shrubs and 1.28 million flowers along the northern extended section of Beijing Road. The trees and flowers will amount to 81 varieties," said Tang Jun.

At present, the greening project has commenced in stages. The development zone has transplanted 2,950 nursery stocks and 2,330 trees over 10 cm in diameter, covering 30,000 square meters.

Before winter comes, the developmental zone will create a green area of 400,000 square meters along the northern trunk road and 200,000 square meters along the northern extended section of Beijing Road. In addition, the second stage project of the northern industrial park will make a green belt covering nearly 400,000 square meters. It will make over one million square meter areas green during this autumn.
