A judge has sentenced Jodie Foster's estranged father to five years in a Los Angeles jail for bilking more than $100,000 from poor and elderly people in a home-building scheme.

City attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan says Lucius Foster was sentenced Friday, two days after he was convicted of 21 misdemeanor counts of grand theft.

The 89-year-old Foster was convicted of taking $5,000 each from people for whom he promised to build affordable homes made from cargo containers. The units were never built, and prosecutors said he lied to clients.

Lucious Foster told City News Service that he remains estranged from his daughter, a two-time Oscar winner. He is due back in court Feb. 23 for a restitution hearing.
