The woman allegedly at the heart of the bizarre murders of the king and queen of Nepal has influential Indian connections and may have fled Kathmandu for New Delhi, reports said Sunday. There are differing official statements about the killings Friday but the most prevalent version of events is that Crown Prince Dipendra allegedly gunned down his parents and other relatives because they objected to his plans to marry Devyani Rana, the woman he had fallen in love with. The Hindustan Times reported that Rana left grief-stricken Kathmandu for safety reasons on Saturday afternoon onboard a flight to New Delhi. Her uncle is Madhav Rao Scindia, leader of India's main opposition Congress party, and her aunt, Vasundra Raje Scindia, is a junior minister in Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's cabinet, the Indian Express Sunday reported. Her mother is Usha Raje Scindia, a member of a royal family from the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Her father, former Nepal foreign and finance minister in Pashupati Rana, is descended from the Rana clan, the once powerful nobility which established a line of hereditary prime ministers in Nepal. Members of Nepal's royal Shah dynasty, including King Birendra and his two brothers, usually choose a spouse from the Rana line to ensure political peace in Nepal. According to this tradition, Dipendra, 29, and Devyani Rana, in her 20s, were a perfect match and made no secret of their relationship. They were often seen enjoying a romantic dinner at a pizza restarant near the royal palace in Kathmandu. Rana was reported to have initially been reluctant to marry the crown prince, although she later fell in love with him and agreed to the wedding. But her Indian connections made her a less suitable candidate for marriage, according to the Express. "In Nepal, anti-India sentiment has often set the kingdom on fire and the last thing the royal family needed was a future queen with Indian blood in her veins," it reported. Dipendra is believed to have told his parents that he was determined to marry the woman he loved, but they threatened he would be never be king if he did so. This apparently led to Friday night's shooting.
