Eight million roses were sold during the Valentine's Day season, more than previous years - with the most expensive costing 300 yuan (US$37), also higher than last year, reports Shanghai Youth Daily.

A florist said that the turnover on Valentine's Day was equal to a month's sales in normal times - with profits to match.

An official with the Shanghai Flower Association said that turnover during the Valentine season accounts for about 10 per cent of the whole year.

Prices were back to normal yesterday, about a tenth of what they cost on Saturday.
