Tevez scores hat-trick as Corinthians beat Santos 7-1 (Reuters) Updated: 2005-11-07 10:06
He fired in the second in the 20th minute after Santos lost possession in
defence and swept home their third in the 36th minute before completing his
hat-trick eight minutes into the second half after a clever one-two with Nilmar.
It got worse for Santos after defender Rogerio was sent off for a second
bookable offence.
Nilmar helped himself to two more goals before Marcelo Mattos completed the
rout with an stoppage-time free kick which went in off the post.
FLAMENGO CLIMB
Corinthians have 74 points from 37 games but remain under pressure from
Internacional and Fluminense.
Vinicius headed Inter in front from a corner before halftime and Edigle
produced a repeat performance shortly after the restart. Midfielder Galeano
pulled one back from Ponte, also with a header.
Internacional stayed ahead of Fluminense on the number of victories after
'Flu' beat struggling Figueirense with goals from Tuta and Alexandre at the end
of each half.
At the other end of the table, Flamengo left the danger zone after coming
from behind to beat Botafogo 3-1 despite having defender Rodrigo sent off in the
38th minute.
Shortly afterwards, Alex Alves, helped by a near-comical mix-up in the
Flamengo defence, put Botafogo ahead.
Flamengo replied in the last 25 minutes with a controversial Renato penalty,
an own goal by defender Ruy and well-taken goal by Leonardo Moura to claim an
unlikely win.
Figueirense replaced them in the bottom four alongside Paysandu, Figueirense
and Atletico Mineiro.
Atletico Mineiro, bottom with 34 points, look doomed after losing 2-1 at home
to Goias. Paysando, coached by Brazil's 1970 World Cup captain Carlos Alberto
Torres, also lost, going down 2-0 at Parana.
