Tevez scores hat-trick as Corinthians beat Santos 7-1

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Argentina forward Carlos Tevez scored a superb hat-trick as Brazilian championship leaders Corinthians hammered last year's champions Santos 7-1 on Sunday to take a step closer to the title.

Corinthians stayed six points ahead of Internacional, who beat Ponte Preta 2-1 with headed goals from defenders Vinicius and Edigle, and Fluminense, who beat Figueirense 2-0.

Each team has five games to play, with Corinthians meeting Internacional on November 20.

Sunday's match was the third meeting between Santos and Corinthians in the championship. Santos won the first 4-2 but the result was later declared void after a match-fixing scandal involving referee Edilson Pereira de Carvalho, who has since been suspended for life.

Last month's replay ended in chaos as Corinthians won 3-2 thanks to a controversial late penalty.

Santos, already angry at having to play again, were outraged and their fans invaded the pitch, forcing the match to be called off in the 89th minute.

On Sunday, however, Santos seem to have lost the stomach for a fight and they fell behind in less than one minute as Tevez escaped down the left and pulled the ball back for Rosinei to sweep into an empty net.

Geilson briefly put Santos back on level terms before Tevez, signed from Boca Juniors last year for a South American record fee of $18 million, put Corinthians in the driving seat.
