Flights to Taiwan are selling out quickly

An association of Taiwanese businessmen living in the city is considering asking the government to allow more planes to fly direct routes to Taiwan over the Spring Festival as tickets on the scheduled flights are almost sold out.

"More than 90 percent of the tickets were sold by Sunday according to the data from the ticket agents of both China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines," Xie Lijun, secretary-general of the Association of Shanghai Taiwan Businessmen Invested Enterprises, said yesterday.

Xie said almost all of the tickets for 10 charter flights from Shanghai to Taiwan would be nearly sold out Monday.

"But there are still many Taiwan people who want to book seats," Xie added. "Just in our association, about 100 to 200 Taiwanese are waiting for tickets."

Xie said the association would make every effort to satisfy Taiwanese people who want to fly home on the direct links.

The association is considering asking the Civil Aviation Administration of China to increase the number of flights or asking airlines to use larger aircraft so more tickets can be sold.

However, the two local carriers offering direct flights say they can't offer any more seats.

"The Boeing 767 jetliner (with a 260-seat capacity) we will use for the flights is the largest aircraft in our fleet," said Wang Wanlong, an official with Shanghai Airlines Co.

China eastern Airlines will also use its biggest jet, an Airbus A340-600 with 322 seats, for the charter flights.

Ten charter flights will travel from Shanghai to Taiwan, six will fly out of Beijing, and eight more will take off from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
