Cantonese channel for junveniles launched
Guangzhou TV launched the country's first Cantonese channel Saturday for the 1.6 million children and young people living in Guangzhou. With more than 30 million yuan (US$3.66 million) invested, the Yong Channel is expected to cater for the 4-to-18 age group in the Pearl Delta area. The channel will broadcast 15 hours a day, with programs on entertainment, news, arts, interviews and youth education. Young people can show their singing and dancing talent in the arts program, sharing their emotions in a interview programs called Youth Online and vote for their favorite songs in the channel's music program every week. Some hit soap operas by popular youth stars, up-to-date games and cartoons will also be selected for the channel's youth audience. To provide more variety for the youth, the channel will introduce about 30 percent of its programs from other youth channels in the country. Cantonese is the most popular dialect in the south Guangdong Province. As all public schools and education materials were restricted to using Mandarin as the standard language, the launch of a Cantonese channel will provide a wider choice of entertainment and help young people remain fluent in their local dialect. |
