Ancient artifacts arrive (Shanghai Daily) Updated: 2004-11-24 10:14 More than 130 cultural
artifacts arrived from Xi'an yesterday and will be stored in Shanghai Museum's
warehouse before the December 29 exhibit begins.
"This is the biggest
exhibition at our museum this year," said Li Feng, the museum's spokesman. "We
are still waiting for the remaining 86 pieces to arrive in the middle of
December."
Some of the national treasures have never travelled outside
Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, due to safety and transport concerns.
The group
of 133 relics that arrived yesterday include mural paintings and a gilded silver
kettle from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), as well as a sword from the Qin
Dynasty (221-206 BC).
But the much anticipated colored terracotta warrior
has not arrived yet.
"Only eight colored terracotta warriors were ever
excavated from the mausoleum of Qinshihuang, the first emperor of the Qin
Dynasty," Li said. "We are working on a very detailed transport plan so that its
safety is guaranteed."
Four famous stone horses carvings for Tang Dynasty
Emperor Li Shimin (598-649 AD) were supposed to be shipped for the exhibition,
but organizers canceled the plan over safety concerns.
