Chinese netizens reach 79.5 million

The number of Internet users, or netizens, on the Chinese mainland reached 79.5 million by the end of 2003, up 34.5 percent over a year earlier, said an authoritative report issued Thursday.

  Computers linked to the Internet had reached 30.89 million by the end of 2003, up 48.3 percent, said the report on the 13th survey of the development of the Internet in China.

The survey, conducted by the China Internet Network Information Center, refers to people who use the Internet for more than one hour each week as netizens.
