( 2004-01-09 21:21) (Xinhua)

A bus accident Thursday in northwest  China had left four people dead as of early Friday morning, police said.

Another five were in critical condition and were being treated  in a hospital.

The long-distance bus, carrying 29 passengers, was heading from Xi'an, capital of the northwestern province of Shaanxi, to Yan'an, a city also in the province.

It tumbled off a bridge over a local river in the Yan'an  section of the No. 210 state highway and plunged into the river,  according to police.

Yan'an city sent 200 police officers to rescue passengers  trapped in the bus and sent them to the hospital in the city.

The police said the number of passengers was not over the limit of the bus capacity and the cause of the accident was under  investigation.
