Disinfection starts in gas field
( 2003-12-27 16:41) (Xinhua)

Medical workers have started a large-scale disinfection at the gas blowout site in Chongqing soon after the cap operation of the gas well completed successfully Saturday morning.

More 100 medical workers are disinfecting eight villages nearby the gas well and they have also taken samples of plants and water for examination.

Local environmental protection department has begun to monitor the water quality in the gas field.

Soft wind and moderate rain in the next three days are helpful to clear the air pollution in the gas field, said experts with Central Meteorological Station Saturday.

But they also warned that rain would also make the earth pollution worse and local government were suggested to take measures to clear the pollutant promptly.

A gas well burst Tuesday night in Kaixian County and released a high concentration of natural gas and sulfureted hydrogen.

An operation to cap the gas well completed successfully at 11: 00 a.m. Saturday and expert predicted that there would be no new blowout in capped gas well.

As of press time, 198 people were killed by the toxic gas and more than 9,000 others had to receive treatment.
