Shandong information industry expanding
( 2003-12-23 01:33) (China Daily)

The electronics and information industry of Shandong Province is expected to bring in more than 170 billion yuan (US$20.5 billion) in production value by the end of this year, a 20 per cent increase year-on-year and one-tenth of total figure for the country.

In 2002, electronic and information product manufacturing alone, brought in a production value of 152 billion yuan (US$18.4 billion), according to Sun Zhiheng, director of the Shandong Information Industry Department.

Shandong currently boasts a group of brand name electronic and information products, including communication and home appliance products in Qingdao, network products and software in Jinan, electronic parts and materials in Yantai and computer casings in Weihai. Brands like Haier, Hisense and Langchao are now famous both at home and abroad.

At the same time the number of software making enterprises has reached more than 700.

Sun said foreign-invested electronic and information enterprises are playing a big role in the province's information industry, with an input of more than US$4 billion to date. Half of the newly-established electronic and information projects are funded by foreign investment.

Yantai IT Industrial Park, with an investment of US$200 million from the Republic of Korea, is expected to attract 100 information industrial enterprises from the ROK, with a yearly production value of 5 billion yuan (US$604 million).

Sun said the province has recently set a goal to form a total of 10 electronics and information industry bases by the year 2005, including the State-level Jiaodong Peninsula information and home appliance industrial base, the Jiaodong Peninsula communication and network equipment industrial base and the Qilu Software Park.

By 2005 the province will also set up 20 enterprise research and development centres and two integrated circuit design centres, which will provide solid technical support for the rapid development of the sector.

It is estimated that Shandong will be capable of making 10 million TV sets, 1 million computers and 10 million mobile phones annually by 2005, with overall home electronics sales surpassing 80 billion yuan (US$9.67 billion).

By that time information service industries should have an annual production value of 70 billion yuan (US$8.45 billion), turning Shandong into an important software development, production and export base for the country.

The quick development of the electronic and information sector has given a big push to Shandong's move into the information age, with efficient information networks covering most areas of the electronics industry, the official added.
