Non-communist party vows to push reunification, peace across Straits
( 2003-12-16 20:20) (Xinhua)

The Taiwan Democratic Self-government League said Tuesday it is duty-bound to promote the development relations across the Taiwan Straits toward the reunification of the motherland.

What Chen Shui-bian has done recently has greatly turned away from Taiwan compatriots' wishes for peace, stability and development, said Zhang Kehui, chairman of the party's central committee at its second plenary meeting.

Chen's plot will not succeed, Zhang added.

Zhang called on organs of the Taiwan Democratic Self-government League of all levels to carry out the basic principles of " peaceful reunification" and "one country, two systems" and the eight-point proposal by Jiang Zemin on the settlement of the Taiwan question, and strongly oppose any attempt for "Taiwan independence", "two Chinas" and "one China, one Taiwan."

The non-communist party will try hard to serve Taiwan compatriots in the Chinese mainland including businessmen, students and tourists, he said.
