Yuhua Tai (Rain-flower Platform) ( 2003-12-02 16:18) (chinadaily.com.cn)

It is said that during the reign of the Wu emperor of Liang, high monk
Yunguang, while giving a sermon on Shizi(stone) hill in the southern suburbs of
Nanjing, moved heaven with the honesty of his words, and heavenly flowers fell
with abundance. Later people changed the name of Shizi hill to Yuhua
Tai(rain-flower platform).
Although this hill is not very high, it is still rather dangerous in shape.
It is a watch-point for south-east Nanjing, and is considered as the Southern
gate, being a strategic point for capturing Nanjing for armies throughout
history. Of the Six Dynasties that set up capital in Nanjing, not one of them
didn't capture Yuhua Tai first. During the times of the Heavenly Kingdom, the
sincere king Li Xiucheng fought bloody battles for years with Zeng Guoquan of
the Qing Dynasty, all at the foot of Yuhua Tai. During the Xinhai revolution,
the revolutionary army attacked Qing forces in the city from Yuhua Tai. In 1927,
after Chaing Kai-shek betrayed the revolution, about 100,000 Chinese communist
members were massacred here. Among the martyrs that died here were Deng
Zhongxia, Luo Dengxian and other central party members of the time.
After liberation, the people of Nanjing build a mausoleum-park memorial in
the spring of 1950 for the martyrs who died here to honor their memory. In the
1980?¡¥s this memorial was renovated, and Deng Xiaoping wrote the name on the
memorial stele and memorial building.
