The Mausoleum of Sun Yatsen ( 2003-12-02 16:11) (chinadaily.com.cn)
Sun Yatsen mausoleum, situated on the southern foothills of the second peak of Mt. Zijin, is the resting place of China great revolutionary pioneer and leader, Sun Yatsen. On March 12th 1925, Sun Yatsen died in Beijing, and according to his wishes, was buried in Nanjing on June 1st, 1929. On March 12th, 1926, construction began on Sun Yatsen's mausoleum, by 1929 construction was complete. The tomb room is located 158 meters above sea level, and the length spanned from the ceremonial gate to the tomb room is 700 meters, with a rise of 73 meters, and 392 steps. The total area of the site is some 80,000 meters. Climbing up from the square below the mausoleum, Boai arch greets you as you enter the mausoleum grounds. A stone stele stands at the main entrance proclaiming that "Here is buried the Premier of China's Nationalist Party Mr. Sun." In the sacrificial hall there is a marble sculpture of Sun Yatsen, around which are inscriptions recording his revolutionary activities. At the end of the sacrificial hall is a gate leading to the tomb hall, in which Sun Yatsen burial coffin rests inside a marble sarcophagus. The covering rectangular slab of the sarcophagus has a sculpture of Sun Yatsen laying in peace, the sight of which is solemn and dignified, making people fell a sense of respect. Besides the main building of the mausoleum, there are some other building around the grounds dedicated to remembering Sun Yatsen, all of which where build from funds given by people of all walks of life and overseas compatriots after Sun Yatsen died in. |
