Dense fog impairs expressway traffic in parts of China
( 2003-12-02 13:54) (Xinhua)

Dense fog Tuesday cause traffic jams on many sections of expressways in northern and eastern China, incurring much inconvenience for traffic communications linking north China's Hebei province, central Henan province, and Shandong, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces and Shanghai metropolis in east China.

In eastern Shandong alone, heavy fog covers nearly all areas in the province except for the Jiaodong Peninsula. Freeways from Jinan, capital of Shandong, to Qingzhou, and the Dezhou section of the expressway trunk from Beijing to Fuzhou, capital of eastern Fujian Province, have been closed off since earlier Tuesday.

In areas around Jinan, visibility is only less than 50 meters, causing great difficulty for driving locally.

High humidity met with an incursion of a weak cold front and the dense fog occurred, said the provincial meteorological bureau. They also forecasted that there would not likely be any clear and sunny skies in Shandong until Wednesday morning.
