Election for district people's congress goes smoothly in Beijing
( 2003-11-26 16:59) (Xinhua)

Elections for deputies to people's congresses at district or county levels have gone smoothly in China's capital Beijing.

To date, more than 7.9 million registered voters have nominated about 50,000 preliminary candidates for deputies to district or county people's congresses in Beijing, and consultation meetings are being held in the city's 2,326 electoral wards to select more than 5,000 final candidates for the final deputy election.

A consultation meeting on Wednesday was held in Xiagongfu electoral ward of Dongcheng District. Representatives from 16 communities and organizations attended the meeting to select three final deputy candidates from eight preliminary candidates.

"In my view, a deputy should not only be good at communication and be enthusiastic in public service, but also have a good educational background and plenty of social experience," said Sun Guorong, an employee of Hualong Industrial and Commercial Company.

Wang Shiying, a resident in the No. 5 resident community in Xiagongfu area said neighborhood committees were playing an increasingly important role, because many retired employees of state-owned enterprises had been transferred to residential communities for care. So selecting a deputy from a neighborhood committee was necessary.

Liu Yimin, an employee of Beijing Wangfujing Foreign Bookstore said private entrepreneurs should be taken into consideration when selecting deputies, because they are becoming one of the most important social groups in modern China.

After more than two hours of heated discussion, Wang Quansheng from Peking Hotel, Zhao Shiwei from Tianyuan Development Group Company and Gong Liying from a neighborhood committee in Xiagongfu resident community were selected as Xiagongfu's final candidates for deputies to the People's Congress of the Dongcheng District.

An official with the Beijing Municipal People's Congress said at the end of this year, all 4,403 deputies to district or county people's congresses in Beijing will be elected.
