Policeman jailed for highway chase death
( 2003-11-26 10:52) (Xinhua)

A local court in Jiangsu Province Tuesday sentenced a police officer to two years imprisonment on a charge of misuse of his power in the wake of a car chase which resulted in a death.

The policeman, surnamed Yan, was attached to a police station in Suining County, Xuzhou City of the eastern province.

On the evening of May 15 this year, Sui tried to check a parked pick-up truck, in which were a young man surnamed Wang and his girlfriend.

When the pick-up sped away, Yan gave chase in his vehicle, in the meantime arranging for a road block to be set up ahead. Wang burst through the roadblock, and died when his pick-up overturned.

Yan and his companions fled, and later concocted an alibi.

The People's Court of Yunlong District, Xuzhou City, found that Yan had had no legal reason for the chase, under Ministry of Public Security rules, which ban such chases in cases of minor offenses.
