Strong winds bring down 500 tons of leaves in Beijing
( 2003-11-21 21:37) (Xinhua)

Hours of strong winds blew down more than 500 tons of leaves Thursday in Beijing, a city refuse company has estimated.

The Beijing Erqing Dust Group said its refuse people had collected 100 tons of leaves from its area of responsibility, five times the daily average.

"We collected one-fifth of the total downed leaves and the rest was done by other companies," said a senior official with the company.

Most were poplar leaves, said Li.

Winds in the city ranged from strong breeze to moderate gale, said meteorologists.

The wind also broke dozens of tree branches in parks across the city, said a report in the Beijing Youth Daily.
