Efficient, flexible energy consumption mechanism important ( 2003-11-21 21:37) (Xinhua) By taking effective
energy-saving approaches and establishing an integrated energy consumption
mechanism, China could decrease its energy consumption from 3.2 billion tons of
standard coal to 2.4 billion in 2020, expert said Friday.
If the energy-saving measures work, China would save 800 million tons of
coal, equal to 80 percent of China's annual coal production and feeding 13 years
of energy demand for Beijing City, said Zhu Yuejun, an energy analyst at an
international seminar on petrochemical, oil and gas reforms in Beijing.
Zhu said China's energy demands would fluctuate in the future and be easily
affected by social economic development, change of economic structure,
technological innovation and energy-saving policies.
According to Zhu's study, the choice of path to future economic development
appears more important than technological innovation in terms of saving energy
and protecting the environment.
Comprehensive sustainable energy strategy featuring efficient energy
utilization, optimal energy structure and the promotion of eco-friendly
industries would be the key for China to achieve its long-term economic
objectives, Zhu stressed.
Xavier Chen, vice president of BP (China) Holding Limited Beijing Branch,
urged China to take energy-saving policies as a national guideline for the
country's future development.
He said China's energy policy orientation would have a profound influence on
the world energy market and global environment, noting that more and more
international factors were affecting China's decision making process on energy
issues.
China needed to be more open and flexible on energy issues, Chen said,
advising China to found an international cooperation department to establish
good communication and cooperation with relevant energy departments in other
countries.
