Chinese surgeons replace thigh for 99-year-old
( 2003-11-07 21:44) (Xinhua)

A Chinese hospital in east China's Anhui province has succeeded in surgically replacing the thigh of a 99-year-old woman.

Such an operation on a senior citizen of that age was very rare, according to doctors of the Shushan Hospital, a branch of the First People's Hospital of the provincial capital of Hefei on Friday.

Liang Chunzhen, the old woman patient, is a local of Changfeng county in Hefei, who fell over and broke her right thigh in June 2002.

The hospital decided to replace the broken bone with an artificial one. The surgeons noted that Liang was "at ease" and looked "composed" during the operation, and chatted casually with nurses.

Shi Ruping, a nurse at the hospital, said Liang has been recovering very well after the operation and would have stitches removed and be discharged very soon.
