One killed, four others shot at Boston bus station
( 2003-11-06 15:41) (Agencies)

A shooting at a city bus station killed one person, wounded four others and sent bystanders screaming and running for cover. Police said a gunman was arrested.

Boston Police Superintendent James Hussey said the shooting appeared to be random. He said it started Wednesday outside a convenience store near the Dudley Square bus station in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood, then ended up inside the station.

The gunman "continued into the station and our officers wrestled him to the ground," he said.

Police said a 52-year-old man was killed in the shooting. Three of the wounded had non-life-threatening injuries, and one was in critical condition, Hussey said. The victims' identities were not immediately released.

Police identified the suspect as Lamar Tillery, 34, of the Roxbury neighborhood.

Tillery, being held on $7,000 bail, was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on charges including murder, said Suffolk County District Attorney spokesman David Procopio. He has a pending case for possession of a handgun, and also is named on arrest warrants for three bank robberies in July, Procopio said.

A firearm was recovered, but police did not immediately disclose the type of weapon.

Luis Santana, 48, who works at Joe's Famous Steak Sub shop near the bus station, said he heard five shots shortly after 3 p.m. He saw panicked bystanders running into the shop for cover.

"I heard the first shot and then heard four others but that's it. I didn't go outside," he said. "People were running everywhere, screaming. It was like Halloween. Their faces ... they were all scared."

The bus station reopened Wednesday night, about six hours after the shooting.
