115 teachers, students killed in Qinghai quake

A total of 103 students and 12 teachers were confirmed dead after the 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Northwest China's Qinghai province, said the rescue headquarters in Yushu prefecture Friday morning.

By 10 o'clock Friday morning, the devastating earthquake had caused 115 deaths and 684 injuries among teachers and students in Qinghai province. Thirty-five were still buried, and 38 were missing, as People's Daily quoted the rescue headquarters during its fourth press conference.

Most of the rescued teachers and students are being sheltered on the school playground or near the school.

The quake toppled 36,572 square meters of school buildings in the quake zone of Yushu prefecture. An area of 61,574 sq m of school campus cannot be used again, according to the rescue headquarters.

The school buildings in Yushu covers an area of 139,175 sq m, while the hardly-hit Gyegu county occupies 98,146 sq m.
