VP urges closer financial, economic ties with US

BEIJING -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping pledged Wednesday to enhance bilateral ties with the United States while urging closer financial, economic and trade cooperation between the two nations.

"China will work with the US to push forward bilateral ties in a sound and steady manner," Xi told Max Baucus, chairman of the US Senate Finance Committee.

During their one-hour meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Xi said trade and economic cooperation is the important foundation of the Sino-US relationship.

The two sides should deal with problems arising from trade and economic cooperation through consultation and in the spirit of mutual benefit and mutual understanding, Xi said.

Xi urged the US to expand cooperation in finance, economy and trade and to adopt measures such as boosting high-tech exports to China, in a bid to make Sino-US economic ties become balanced, sustained and mutually beneficial.

Baucus agreed with Xi's remarks on bilateral ties and said the US-China relationship is the most important one in the world.

China and the United States have made joint efforts and contributed to the recovery of the world economy, said Baucus, who added both nations should continue to improve cooperation in fields such as economy and trade.

Baucus, who has paid many visits to China over the last 40 years, hopes to open new markets for the US state of Montana during this visit to Beijing and Shanghai, according to his official website.
