China hopes for stability in Kyrgyzstan

BEIJING -- China said Tuesday it respects the choice of the Kyrgyz people and hopes Kyrgyzstan will be stable.

"This is in the interests of the Kyrgyz people, and it will be conducive to peace, development and prosperity in central Asia," Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told a regular press briefing Tuesday afternoon when commenting on the parliamentary elections of Kyrgyzstan that concluded on Sunday.

Ma said China is a friend of Kyrgyzstan that pays attention to the situation in its neighbor, adding that China has noted that the election proceeded smoothly.

According to the data from Kyrgyzstan's Central Election Commission, five Kyrgyz political parties passed the 5-percent threshold at the election.

The five parties are the Ata-Zhurt Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Ar-Namys Party, the Respublika Party and the Ata-Meken Party.
