In the 31 years since China and the US established diplomatic relations, the two sides have made great progress amid vicissitudes, Premier Wen Jiabao told visiting former US president Jimmy Carter.

"Thirty-one years ago, former president Carter and Mr Deng Xiaoping decided upon the establishment of Sino-US relations in the spirit of courage and bold vision befitting true statesmen,” Wen said in Zhongnanhai - the central government complex - where he received Carter.

"It is an epoch-making event," he added.

Carter will visit Beijing, Shanghai and Central China's Hunan province during his stay in China from September 5 to September 10.

He came to China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.
