1 Infrastructure

For decades, China has assisted developing countries with road construction, rural electrification, and a variety of municipal building projects. By 2009, the nation had completed 442 economic and 622 social facilities.

2 Industries

China is helping developing countries establish industry and harness resources. By late 2009, China had taken part in 700 industrial projects around the globe. Areas of focus included textiles, machinery, chemicals, electronics and energy.

3 Agriculture

By the end of last year, China had assisted with 221 agricultural projects in developing countries. Aid included water conservation technologies, cultivation equipment, and training for farmers. A number of agricultural technology centers were also established.

4 Education

By the end of 2009, China had built more than 100 schools in developing countries and offered scholarships to 70,627 oversea students. The nation also sent more than 2,000 teachers abroad and trained 10,000 instructors and headmasters. China provided financial support to 70,627 students from 119 developing countries between 1950 and 2009.

The 579-km long Karakoram Highway in Pakistan was completed with China's assistance in January 1971. The world's highest stretch of road, it is a symbol of lasting friendship between China and Pakistan. The highway begins in Islamabad and runs through the Karakoram mountains into China.

In the 1960s and 1970s, China helped build the Tazara railway connecting Tanzania and Zambia. The 1,860 km railway began trial operations in July1976. To build the railway, China sent one million tons of various equipment and materials, and dispatched 50,000 engineering and technical workers. China also helped set up vehicle repair plants, lumber processing factories and hospitals along the railway. This not only facilitated the construction work, but also laid a foundation for the railway's operation.

The national telecommunication network upgrade in Myanmar was completed in June 2002. Built with concessional loans provided by China, the project installed a 55,000-line digital switching system.

The Lagdo Hydropower Station in Cameroon was built in the 1980s. The project has a power transmission and transformation grid, a reservoir of 700 million cubic meters, and an installed capacity of 72,000 kW. It plays an important role in the economic development of Cameroon.

The Sandel Cotton Mill in Bangladesh was completed with China's assistance in October 1983. It has 260 looms and 25,000 spindles.

Ma'an Industrial City in Jordan, built by the Chinese government, was completed in February 2005. The project consists of a 2,200 sq m office building, a waste water treatment facility, city roads and utilities infrastructure. The project built in the desert has effectively transformed the southern part of Jordan into an attractive investment destination.

In the 1960s and 1970s, China helped Mali set up two sugar plants. In February 1996, the two plants merged into a China-Mali joint venture named Sukala S.A. The plant produces 35,000 tons of sugar and 2.4 million liters of alcohol per year. It is one of the largest taxpayers in Mali and provides about 10,000 local jobs.

The Chinese-built Ani sugar plant in Togo was completed in December 1985 and leased to China for operations. It can process 500 tons of sugarcanes per day and produce 7,000 tons of sugar per year. The plant has given more than 1,000 jobs to locals.

In August 2006, China provided 1,205 sets of farming tractors to Kyrgyzstan on short notice. President Askar Akayew wrote twice to President Hu Jintao expressing his thanks. The picture shows two Kyrgyzstan locals praising the tractors.

In May 1984, the Medjerda-Beja Trench, constructed with Chinese assistance, was completed. The trench is 120 km long and the irrigated area is 19,000 hectares. The channel diverts water from western to eastern Tunisia and is considered a symbol of friendship between China and Tunisia.

Lesotho National Library and Archive funded by the Chinese government is the only one of its kind in the country. Construction began in April 2004, and the building was put into use in August 2005. It plays an important role in the development of Lesotho's culture and education.

In 2003, China helped Egypt with phase I of its long-distance education project, covering 27 provinces of the country. From 2006 to 2007, China helped complete Phase II, which increased the number of teaching centers in Egypt from 33 to 143.

The Sino-Egyptian Friendship Model School, Egypt, was completed in 2008. Nearly 1,500 students are enrolled in 42 classes.
