China actively supports the World Food Program of the United Nations in providing multilateral food aid. Since 1979, China has given more than $43 million to the program. Approximately $5 million went towards Zimbabwe emergency food aid benefiting 710,000 locals. |
As things stand now, China is a middle-low income, developing country, facing a multitude of challenges on the road to development.
Nevertheless, we will do our utmost to support and assist other developing countries in speeding up their development.
China has extended preferential tariff treatment to over 30 least developed countries (LDCs) while reducing or canceling the debts owed by some countries.
Under China's direction, such cooperation mechanisms as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the China-Arab Cooperation Forum were established.
China has also made donations to the China Regional Cooperation and Poverty Reduction Fund of the Asian Development Bank. Last May, the China International Poverty Reduction Center was formally launched in Beijing. To increase assistance to other developing countries, the following new measures will be taken:
China has decided to accord zero tariff treatment to certain products from 39 LDCs, covering most of their exports to China.
China will further expand aid programs to heavily indebted countries (HICs) and LDCs. Within the next two years, it will write off or otherwise forgive all overdue interest-free and low-interest government loan parts owed by HICs.
Within next three years, China will provide $10 billion in concessional loans and preferential export buyer's credit to developing countries. This will improve their infrastructure and promote cooperation between enterprises on both sides.
China will, within the next three years, increase assistance to developing countries, particularly those in Africa. China will provide anti-malaria drugs and other medicines, set up and improve medical facilities and train medical staff. Specific programs will be implemented through the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and other bilateral channels.
China will help train 30,000 professionals in developing countries within the next three years, speeding up human resources development.
