BEIJING - The Chinese mainland's diplomatic missions overseas have been providing help to Taiwan passengers stranded in Europe due to a huge ash cloud from an erupting Icelandic volcano, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the mainland's State Council said Tuesday.

A statement released by the office said the mainland's diplomatic missions overseas had launched emergency plans to provide shelter and assistance for Taiwan travelers.

The statement said the office would try to solve problems for Taiwan travelers and follow developments as the disruption continued.

The ash cloud, which began spewing from the Eyjafjoell volcano on Wednesday, is said to have resulted in the worst air travel chaos since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.
