China to continue int'l co-op in fighting crimes

RIO DE JANEIRO - China will continue working with the international community to prevent and fight crimes, said a Chinese minister on Saturday.

The Chinese government always attaches great significance to crime-prevention and criminal justice and has made unremitting efforts to strengthen domestic legislation and improve the effectiveness of crime-fighting endeavor, said Chinese Minister of Justice Wu Aiying at the 12th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Salvador, Brazil on Saturday.

She briefed the congress on China's achievements in such fields as criminal law amendments, improving criminal justice, community-based corrections and the reform of law-enforcement mechanism.

The Chinese government underscores the importance of international cooperation on crime-prevention and criminal justice and has ratified a number of international treaties like the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime along with its supplementing protocols on the fight against human trafficking and corruption, adding that China is also the signatory to many international anti-terror agreements.

The UN meeting, running from April 12th to 19th, is themed "Comprehensive strategies for global challenges: crime prevention and criminal justice systems and their development in a changing world."

Representatives from 103 nations, 41 inter-governmental institutions and 47 non-governmental organizations are participating. in the event.
