One dead, two injured in campus knife attack in SW China

CHENGDU - A man killed a young woman and injured two other people in a knife attack at a university campus in southwest China's Sichuan Province, officials said Wednesday.

The man attacked a young couple on the Sichuan University campus in Chengdu at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, killing the girl and severely injuring the boy, according to the information office of the university.

He tried to attack another couple, but he was subdued by a young man who was slightly injured.

Police have named the suspect as Cao Shijie, a male sophomore at Sichuan University's public management school. The identities of the victims have not been released.

Police are still investigating the attack and have yet to give a possible motive.

The injured were being treated at the Huaxi Hospital and were stable, doctors said.

Most of the freshmen and sophomores at the university study at the campus in Wenxing Township, Chengdu City. The university has ordered teachers to strengthen security and to calm the students.
