Shanghai hotel prices of all levels are expected to rise during the World Expo, with the highest being triple the normal rates, the Beijing News reported Tuesday.

Beijing News interviewed 15 hotels near the Expo, finding that prices rose 40 percent on average, among which the three-star and two-star hotel prices rose higher than four- and five-star hotels.

A room in a five-star hotel would charge 2,300 yuan ($336) to 3,000 yuan ($439) every night, with an increase of 25 percent.

Shanghai authorities said they didn't want to see an unreasonable increase in hotel prices and has recruited 500 urban families and 200 suburban families to accommodate more international friends, the report said.
