CHONGQING: Four people were confirmed dead and three others remained missing after Thursday's colliery gas outburst in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, local authorities said Friday.

The accident occurred at about 5 pm when seven miners were working at Jiuli Coal Mine in Fengjie County, the publicity department of the county committee of the Communist Party of China said in a press release.

After a night of forced ventilation, rescuers were able to enter the pit at daybreak and found four dead bodies in the shaft, it said.

Rescue work continued Friday.

The mine, with an annual output of 20,000 tons, is privately-owned. Its owner has been held by police for investigation.
