BEIJING - The recent identity falsification case by an official in Hebei Province indicates that public supervision should play a stronger role in personnel management, according to an article carried on the People's Daily.

Wang Yali, former deputy chief of the Shijiazhuang city committee of the Communist Youth League of China, has been arrested for alleged falsification of identity to obtain an official position, according to the provincial commission for discipline inspection.

The commission did not give any further details but said an initial investigation found instances of wrongdoing, and many other people involved were also under investigation with several of their cases transferred to judicial departments.

The Wang investigation was launched in February 2009, after the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China received a real-name report of the case.

Wang secured an official post and was promoted allegedly under false pretenses over the past 10 years or more. However, she could not deceive the people at the grassroots forever, said the signed article by Zhong Zuwen.

The case demonstrates that to correct wrongdoings in personnel management, public supervision should play a stronger role. The authorities should take real-name tip-offs seriously, conduct a thorough investigation of every such case and hand out proper punishment to the responsible person, said the article.

The  article urged officials in charge of personnel management to further increase their sense of responsibility, and withstand the pressure of nepotism and temptation of unlawful personal gain, so as to further ensure the fairness of official selection and promotion.
