HARBIN - China's northeast Heilongjiang province will build a park in 2010 to mark the Japanese Unit 731's notorious experiments during its aggression of China, said local authorities.

The park will be based on the zone of the Unit 731 ruins in Pingfang district, Harbin city, capital of Heilongjiang, said Harbin Municipal Government in a statement.

The new park will be built with an eye to apply for world heritage status, it said.

Unit 731 was a covert biological and warfare research and development center of Japanese invaders during its war of aggression against China (1937-1945). It conducted vivisection and other inhumane experiments on Chinese prisoners of war.

A museum, built based on the Unit 731 ruins, opened to public on August 15, 1985. The museum includes a crime evidence hall and 23 ruins.

The relocation of companies and residents for construction of the park was initiated in November 2009.
