SEOUL - Six people are missing after a Chinese fishing boat sank in international waters off South Korea' s southern island of Jeju earlier Saturday, Seoul's Yonhap News Agency quoted the coast guard as saying.
Fifteen crew members were on the 280-ton fishing boat, which sank at around 5:00 a.m. local time in international waters about 150 kilometers off Jeju. Nine of them were rescued by other boats in the fleet, but six others went missing, Yonhap said.
South Korea's coast guard sent a 1,500-ton patrol vessel to the scene after informed by China's related authorities, to help search and rescue operations. But strong winds and high waves were hampering the operation, it added, quoting local police as saying.
China's consulate-general in Gwangju also confirmed the accident to Xinhua.
