New ambassador arrives in Tokyo to assume office

TOKYO - China's new ambassador to Japan, Cheng Yonghua, arrived at Narita airport near Tokyo on Sunday evening to assume his official duties.

Cheng, who previously did four stints at the Chinese embassy in Tokyo including an assignment as deputy chief of mission from 2003 to 2006, said he would work to cement Sino-Japanese mutually beneficial strategic ties and to further improve friendship between the two peoples.

"I feel familiar to work again in Japan and am happy to be here," the new ambassador said at the airport. "I look forward to meeting again many old friends."

"Sino-Japanese relations have achieved a lot of success in recent years. The leaders in two countries attached great importance to the bilateral ties and we should continue to reinforce political mutual trust and economic cooperation," Cheng said.

The new ambassador, born in 1954 in northeastern province of Jilin, studied at Soka University in Tokyo between 1975 and 1977 and is proficient in Japanese.

He had previously worked as ambassador to Malaysia and Republic of Korea before replacing Cui Tiankai, who is now China's deputy foreign minister.
