SHANGHAI: Police shot dead a hostage taker who killed a girl in Shanghai on Sunday.
Local police said they received a report at about 3:30 pm, saying a man kidnapped a girl under 10 years old at knife point on the Jiangsu Road.
The man hacked the girl and ran away when seeing police arriving. He hacked another two passers-by when fleeing.
Police shot dead the man after warnings went in vain.
The girl died later at hospital and the passers-by suffered no life-threatening injuries, according to police.
The hostage taker, surnamed Zhao, is from the southern province of Guangdong, initial police investigation showed.
No further details are immediately known.
