Two killed in factory blast in east China

JINAN: At least two people were killed and two others injured after an explosion ravaged a factory in Shandong Province, local authority said Sunday.

The blast occurred at 3:20 pm Saturday in a plant of Xinhecheng Phamarceutical Co. Ltd. in Weifang City, leaving one worker dead at the site, the Binhai Economic Development Zone, where the firm is located, said in a notice Sunday.

Three workers were injured and one of them died Sunday in hospital due to fatal injuries, according to the notice.

The company mainly produces flavors and aromatic chemicals with 1.06 billion yuan ($155.2 million) in investment. It is building the first-stage project with an annual production capacity of 8,000 tonnes.

Officers with the local work safety watchdog and public security authorities are investigating the accident.
