Officials who are punished by supervisory bodies will still be able to get promoted, according to a draft amendment to the Administrative Supervision Law of the People's Republic of China, the Beijing Times reported today.

The draft states that officials who have received disciplinary action other than being dismissed will be absolved from their punishment once the disciplinary period expires provided they showed remorse and violated no further administrative rules during this period.

The draft has been sent to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's legislature, for first review, the report said.

Experts say this rule will help protect the rights of those officials who have been disciplined as they are mostly not directly involved in the incidents or accidents for which they are punished.
