Police have detained a person believed to be responsible for starting an earthquake rumor which caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes during the Chinese New Year, dahe.cn reported today.

The rumor - which is believed to have started after a series of earthquake drills at local hospitals - warned that a destructive 6.0 magnitude quake would strike in the cities of Jinzhong, Changzhi, Jincheng and Taiyuan, the provincial capital.

Shanxi police launched an investigation and detained one person, but no other information was immediately available.

"My sister called me saying a quake will happen. After hearing that, all my family left home, hopped into car and stayed a whole night in a crowded street," local resident Zhao Liu said.

Citizens later condemned the person responsible on the Internet after discovering they had been fooled.
