The volunteers include 77,000 working at World Expo site and 130,000 at booths throughout the city.

By the end of 2009, more than 610,000 applicants were competing for an opportunity to volunteer during the Expo, China Daily reported on Wednesday.

The applicants, aged 16 to 99, are mainly residents of the Yangtze River Delta region. Most of them have a specialty such as psychological consultative knowledge, gesture language, foreign languages and emergency assistance skill, China Daily's report said.
