Family of deadly fight victim compensated

The family of Li Dongdong, killed in a fight during the expropriation of farmland, got 500,000 yuan ($73,237) for compensation, the Beijing News reported today.

On January 7, more than 200 people crowded into Hewan village in Pizhou city of Jiangsu province to demand farmland from the villagers. During the disturbance, one person died and another was severely injured.

Seventy-two people were detained, including eight suspected of being instigators. A town party chief and aother two officials have been removed from their posts. An unnamed villager said 2,500 mu (166 ha.) farmland had been expropriated since 2003. There had been several fights about compensation for the land.

China's Public Security minister has involved himself in the case, the report said.
