The price of household tap water in Beijing may climb by 0.9 yuan (13 US cent), xinhuanet.com reported.

The Beijing Development and Reform Commission (BDRC) announced Tuesday that the water resource fee could increase by 0.48 yuan while the sewage treatment fee may rise by 0.42 yuan, the report said.

A hearing will be held on December 16 for the BDRC to decide between two proposed price adjustment plans, a one-step price rise or a gradual price increase over three years.

Beijing is suffering a water shortage, with less than 300 cubic meters per capita, which is far below the international warning level of 1,000 cubic meters, following the city’s ninth successive year of dry weather. .
