Having divorced once, university graduate Lv Jianlei, 26, told Xinhua on Thursday that he had been very protective of the second marriage.

"My wife kept talking about the wealthy life of the prostitute friend and it really bugged me," Lv said.

The prostitute was a regular customer at the clothing store that Lv's wife ran.

"I just wanted to scare her away from my wife," Lv said, explaining the knifepoint mugging. "I was sure that she would be a bad influence on my wife."

Lv stole 600 yuan ($87.9) in cash and 3,600 yuan worth of jewelry and a cellphone from the prostitute by threatening her with a knife on June 9 and he was arrested 14 days later.
