BRUSSELS: China and the European Union should improve their dialogue on macroeconomic and financial issues while working to oppose protectionism in trade, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said on Friday.

"We should ... strengthen dialogue on macroeconomic and financial issues," Xi told an economic conference during a visit to Belgium, which hosts the 27-country EU's headquarters.

The EU and China should also "improve coordination in the reform of the international financial regime and oppose all forms of trade and investment protectionism", he said.

Xi said there were signs of recovery in the global economy, but the process would take time. In China, recovery has yet to be put on a "stable and solid footing," he said.
