On Jan. 24, Wei Fazhao hit an elderly couple while intoxicated and fled in his car. The couple died at the scene. He kept driving and later hit eight villagers in a second accident, killing six of them and injuring two.

Wei was officially arrested in February, suspected of jeopardizing public safety in a dangerous way. The court determined he must be severely punished based on fleeing the accident and his unwillingness to confess during the investigation.
