Police bust over 400 criminal gangs nationwide

Chinese police have successfully broken up over 400 organized criminal gangs in the construction, mining, transportation and wholesale sectors and confiscated illegal holdings worth over four billion yuan ($585.58 million) since the launch of a campaign to curb criminal gangs, Chinanews.com.cn reported today.

In the three-year-long campaign, Chinese police detained over 89,000 suspects in connection with 1,267 cases and convicted 12,796 people.

From January in 2006 to July 2009, courts at different levels closed 1,171 cases in connection with criminal gangs involving 12,796 people. Altogether 6,739 people involved in 723 cases have been sentenced.

More than 3,100, or 46 percent of them, received prison terms above five years, life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
